Remagen

In March of 1945, following the D-Day Landing in June of 1944 and the Battle of the Bulge from December 1944 to January 1945, United States forces worked their way to the heart of Germany. One big obstacle, the Rhine River. The Germans had been destroying every crossing, the bridge at Remagen remained. On March 7th, 1945, the US 9th Army took control of the bridge. German air strikes tried to take out the bridge but were unsuccessful. 10 days later, the bridge collapsed killing 28 Americans.  The Peace Bridge today remains as a testament to the continuing efforts by all world powers to stop the destruction of war.
