Day #9: Pulborough and Stopham

St. Mary the Virgin Church at Stopham

Traveling southwest of London, about 90 km, we visited the Stopham estate near the village of Pulborough. Of particular interest on this portion of our tour was the ancient church of St. Mary the Virgin, situated on the Stopham Estate, home of the Barttelot family since 1379. This is especially important to me as it the ancestral home of my mother’s family in England.

Brass Effigies of twelve members of the Barttelot family embedded in the floor

The windows of this church date back as far as the 15th century and depict many members of the Barttelot family, who still live on the estate.

The east window depict Barttelot heraldic shields, circa 1638
